Office Supporters

  • help with office tasks
  • are ideally students, retirees or those available during the weekday,
  • can help with mailings, filing, etc.,
  • average time commitment: 2 hours per shift.

Current office support needs:

  • help with filing project
  • photocopy articles and file
  • clean stubborn wipe board, possibly spray paint with chalkboard paint
  • volunteer tasks through Community Shares of Wisconsin (stuffing envelopes, signing thank you cards, etc.) to fulfill our membership requirements

Event Supporters

  • help at ACLU-WI events or volunteer to be at an information table at a community event,
  • have duties can include collecting signatures from potential members, registering participants, being a runner, help with set-up/tear-down, etc.
  • can also be a part of a planning committee for an event or host a fundraising and educational house party.

Current event needs

  • volunteers are needed to be legal observers, photographers or videographers at the counter-demonstration against the National Socialist Movement (Nazi) rally in Madison on Saturday, August 26. Legal observers will hand out protestor rights information cards and will watch for violations of protestor rights during the protest. Photographers and videographers will be on hand to document the protest and any problems. Time commitment: attend one two-hour legal observer training to understand basic protestor rights (Wednesday, August 23, UW Law School room 2260, 6:00 p.m.; be available during protest to meet up at 11:00 a.m. at the ACLU office and stay until at least 4:00 p.m. when the protest officially ends.
  • volunteers are needed to support an information table at Fighting Bob Fest on Saturday, September 9. Time t.b.a. Event admission is free. http://www.madison.com/tct/news/stories/index.php?ntid=93306
  • volunteers needed to support an information table during the Wisconsin Education Association Council (WEAC) conference, October 26-27 in Madison. Details t.b.a.

Issue-Based Action

Current issues:

  • Opposing the proposed death penalty advisory referendum on the November 2006 ballot
  • outreach phone calls to Bar Association leaders statewide to survey them on their stand on the death penalty advisory referendum and to get their commitment to making public statements against the referendum. Service should be around three to four hours and the list, script and cell phone are provided.
  • research right-to-life leaders for email outreach. Service should be around one to two hours and requires Internet access.
  • Hand out mini-fliers on the referendum at the September 2 rally and march against the gentrification of the Allied Drive neighborhood. Must be available on Saturday, September 2 from noon to around 3:00 p.m. and volunteer should be assertive in order to proactively approach people to give them fliers and answer basic questions about the referendum.
  • Opposing the proposed ban on civil unions and marriage for gay and lesbian couples on the November 2006 ballot

Lobby Network Action Volunteers

  • get action alerts from the ACLU-WI and contact their legislators, write letters to the editor of their local paper and tell their friends about important current issues,
  • watch news and legislation on civil liberties issues in the state and especially in South Central Wisconsin. These issues include but aren’t limited to: privacy, freedom of speech, reproductive rights, immigrant rights, LGBT civil rights, the attempt to reinstate the death penalty, prisoners’ rights and voting rights.
  • average time commitment: two hours a week (mostly internet research and e-mail communications)
