Our ILSA members come from many different tribal nations. Recently, members represent have represented the Ojibwe, Ho-Chunk, Oneida , Menominee, Navajo, Sioux, Shawnee, Stockbridge-Munsee, and Iowa Nations, to only mention a few. We serve many needs for all UW students, Indigenous and non-Indigenous alike. We support our members both academically and socially. Some of us have spouses and children with us and some of us do not. Some of us are right out of undergrad and some of us are coming back after being out in the working world. We strive to be of resource and will assist you as you adjust to life in Madison, WI . Whether it be with childcare requests, the best place to live, or the best restaurants in town, we will be there to serve as experienced resources.
In addition to our monthly social gatherings and academic resources, ILSA provides other opportunities such as moot court competitions, attendance at national Indian Law conferences, and summer job opportunities with WI tribes through the Great Lakes Indian Law Center . ILSA also takes several recruiting trips around the country to visit and meet with students considering attending the UW Law School. ILSA hosts a yearly legal conference entitled "The Coming Together of the Peoples Conference", this student coordinated conference brings in national speakers on Indian Law issues. We know contemplating law school is an important decision and that you have many questions. The admissions office, as well as us here at ILSA, are available to answer any questions you may have as you consider your options. As you make your decision, consider some of the following:
- When deciding on when to visit UW, please let admissions know you'd like to meet with us and we'll make sure to make ourselves available. You could also visit us on one of our recruiting trips. We head to the NIEA and AISES national conferences every year. Check our news page as we get closer to these fall recruiting trips and if you are in the NM area we are in Albuquerque every mid-April for the National Fed. Indian Law Conference
- Contact ILSA for help with anything. Application questions or general requests, we want to make your process easier.
- Contact Professor Richard Monette. He teaches the Indian Law courses here at the Law School . His number is (608) 263-7409 and he can answer any questions you may have regarding current Indian Law curriculum or just questions about the UW Law School in general.
