         <title>Information Session and Debate</title>
<description>This Friday a recent UW grad, Doug Dallmann, is going to be in town to host an information session about his Portland, OR firm, Klarquist Sparkman. Klarquist Sparkman is the largest IP firm in the Pacific Northwest and deals with patents, trademarks, and copyrights, including litigation. Doug will talk about working at Klarquist, living in Portland and what the firm looks for in summer associate candidates. If you have any interest in working in the Pacific Northwest you should attend. We&apos;re going to order pizza, probably Ian&apos;s. Also, 2Ls are invited to bring their resumes along to submit for summer associate positions.

The information session will be this Friday 10/17, at 5pm in room 3250. If you plan on attending, please RSVP back to Greg at ghflygt@wisc.edu so we know how much pizza (and what kinds) to get.

Also, IPSO has teamed up with the Federalist Society to bring you a debate, featuring our own Shubha Ghosh, about when expressive works infringe on trademarks. For those who haven&apos;t had the opportunity to take a class with Ghosh or hear him speak, it is sure to be interesting and engaging. The debate will be held on Wed. Oct. 22nd at 6pm in Lubar Commons. The food provided will be Qdoba.

If you have questions about either event, let Greg know at ghflygt@wisc.edu

         <title>Trademarks Course</title>
<description>Noah Dermer is working on trying to have Trademarks offered in Spring 2009. Trademarks was last taught in Spring 2007. If you are a 2L or 3L and are interested in taking the class in Spring 2009, please e-mail nsdermer@wisc.edu so that he can add your name to a list. It is important that we show interest in the class if we would like it offered.

This course investigates the law of disputes about trade symbols -- Coke, Aspirin, Monopoly, Bucky Badger and the shape of a bottle of household bleach. The laws governing the use and abuse of trade symbols is a matter of both federal and state law, and this course develops both an understanding of the competing theoretical rationales for protection of trade symbols, and a knowledge of the mechanics of the federal and state laws concerning such symbols. Some attention is also given to actionable false advertising, as addressed in the Lanham Act. The course studies the interests of, and conflicts between, (1) consumers of products and services, (2) established producers of those products and services, and (3) those who wish to compete with the established producers.

         <title>TotalPatent / PatentOptimizer</title>
         <description>TotalPatent / PatentOptimizer
3pm, Monday, April 7
Computer Classroom on the 2nd floor of the library

Thought your god-like student access to Lexis/Nexis had access to everything? Think again!

If you&apos;re thinking about patent prosecution, there are two tools that Lexis offers that you don&apos;t have access to... until now.

We&apos;ve arranged with Carolyn Bach to get a brief introduction to TotalPatent with a little about PatentOptimizer as well. These are tools you&apos;re likely to see in prosecution at firms. It will also give you an idea of what software tools can do.

&gt;From the website:

TotalPatent™
Protect your intellectual property and optimize its potential with the most comprehensive and relevant, yet easy-to-use, patent research, analysis, and retrieval system available anywhere.

PatentOptimizer™
PatentOptimizer™ helps you construct well-tailored patent applications that yield stronger, more defensible patents. An effective analysis tool during litigation, the service can quickly deconstruct online-issued patents and pinpoint ambiguities, issues, or problems that have previously gone undetected.

Hope to see you then!
