Law Students for Reproductive Justice

Event Calendar & Details

Our events this year have included:

Sex Toys 101:

This seminar gained national notoriety last year when the UW Law School administration canceled the event just hours before it was to begin.  Dean Davis apologized to our student organization and has given permission for our org to put the event on again this year.  This October, LSRJ once again invited a representative of A Woman's Touch, a Madison sexuality resource center, to give a seminar on the use, health, and hygiene of sex toys.  Approximately 20 attendees enjoyed pizza, sex toy trivia, free sex toy prizes, and an informative and interactive exploration of sex toys.  LSRJ supplied an informational hand-out called Sex Toys and the Law on recent circuit court decisions interpreting constitutional protections of sexuality and privacy.

Organic Soap Sale (Fall and Spring):

Thousands of women and children die every year from infection when pregnant women are forced to give birth in unsanitary conditions in refugee camps.  In an effort to reduce mother and infant mortality, LSRJ is teaming with an international NGO, and with other law student orgs to raise funds for clean birth kits.  Each kit contains simple items such as a plastic sheet to lie on, sterile gauze, surgical gloves, umbilical cord clamps, ties, and a sterilized surgical blade and costs approximately $2 to produce and distribute to pregnant women in refugee camps.  To raise awareness of this important Reproductive Justice issue, LSRJ will be selling homemade organic soaps in the atrium again this April.  Stop by to get your Mother's Day shopping out of the way and support a worthy cause.

Condom Casino:

LSRJ joined with the Village Health Project this spring semester to host this great fundraiser for clean birth kits and to provide pads in rural Ugandan schools so that girls do not have to miss school during their periods.  Participants played roulette, Texas Hold'em, poker, and blackjack, as well as non-casino games such as condom bozo and the condom toss.  Players used condoms as chips and received their "winnings" in condoms.  Many players donated their extra condoms to an organization that will bring them to Africa this summer.
