March 15-17, 2013
The University of Wisconsin Law School Moot Court Board is pleased to announce that it will host its annual Evan A. Evans Constitutional Law Moot Court Competition over the weekend of Friday, March 15, 2013 through Sunday, March 17, 2013. The competition is open to all law schools accredited by the American Bar Association.
About Judge Evans
The Honorable Evan A. Evans, an 1899 graduate of the University of Wisconsin Law School, served as a judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit from 1916 to 1948, and in the role of senior judge from 1934 to 1948. He maintained strong ties to the University of Wisconsin, serving as trustee of the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation, as president of the Alumni Association, and as a member of the Board of Visitors.
While on the bench, Judge Evans asked for and received a separation of the duties handled by the circuit and district court, so that the district court could handle all of the trial work, while the circuit court could handle the growing number of appeals. Judge Evans’ request to physically separate the courts resulted in the construction of the United States Court of Appeals building at 1212 Lake Shore Drive in Chicago.
The University of Wisconsin Law School Moot Court Board is pleased to honor the career of Judge Evans by inviting students to argue constitutional issues in hopes of living up to his high standard of appellate advocacy. Judge Evans, noted for his writing skills and outstanding oral argument during his years in practice, left as his legacy a standard of excellence for the field of appellate advocacy. This standard of excellence inspired the dedication of our competition to Judge Evans.
About the Competition
Oral arguments will begin the afternoon of Friday, March 15, 2013, and conclude the afternoon of Sunday, March 17, 2013. Each team will argue in all three of the preliminary rounds. The first two preliminary rounds will be on Friday afternoon. The third preliminary round will be on Saturday morning. During the first two preliminary rounds, each team will argue on-brief once and off-brief once. Teams will be randomly assigned by the competition director to argue either on-brief or off-brief for the third preliminary round.
The preliminary through semi-final rounds will be held in Dane County Courthouse at 215 South Hamilton Street on Friday and Saturday. The final round will be held in the Wisconsin Supreme Court Hearing Room in the Wisconsin State Capitol at Two East Main Street on Sunday. Competition judge panels will be composed of experienced trial attorneys, and judges from various state and federal courts.
Registration form and payment must be received by January 1, 2013.
Problem will be distributed on Monday, January 21, 2013.
Briefs must be postmarked by Monday, February 25, 2013.
A more detailed list of competition deadlines and a schedule of related events will be distributed to all participating law schools prior to the competition weekend.
To register for the competition, return both a completed Registration Form, and a check for the appropriate registration fee, by January 1, 2013. Checks should be made payable to "UW Board of Regents." For additional registration details, consult the registration form itself.
The registration fee is $500 for one team, or $1000 for two teams. No school may register more than two teams. Registration fees are non-refundable, except as described in the registration form itself. Your registration is not complete until the competition director receives both your completed registration form and your check for the registration fee. The competition director will acknowledge by email receipt of each completed registration form and payment. Registration may fill prior to January 1, 2013. If your registration form and payment are received after registration is already full, the competition director will promptly notify you of that fact by email, and will return your check for the registration fee.
Only the first ten schools to register and pay for two teams will be guaranteed the ability to send two teams to the competition. If one of those schools registering two teams later decides to send fewer than two teams, that school will forfeit its registration fee(s) for the team(s) it does not send. Any additional school beyond the first ten that attempts to register two teams will be given the option of either placing its second team on a waitlist or withdrawing both of its team registrations altogether.
Each school or team is responsible for booking and paying its own travel and lodging arrangement fees.
The competition and all related events will take place on or near the Capitol Square in downtown Madison, Wisconsin. Locations are within easy walking distance of each other.
