The UW Student Animal Legal Defense Fund is dedicated to both protecting the welfare of animals through the legal system and providing a forum of education for law students, lawyers, judges, law enforcement officals, and the community. SALDF educates the legal community about legal and social issues relating to animals, such as animal ownership, factory farming, and domestic violence.

The BIG CAT RESCUE

a note from our former president about the BIG CAT RESCUE: "the Wisconsin Big Cat Rescue and Educational Center in Rock Springs, is just getting their new facility off the ground. They are housing about 30 lions, tigers, and leapords right now. I have two questions for SALDF-
1) Is anyone interested in being the Big Cat Board's secretary? They need someone to attend the meetings in Rock Springs, take notes, and follow through with inidvidual members to make sure they did the work assigned to them during the board meetings. Anyone interested can contact me, and I will forward them to the Big Cat President for an interview.
2) If you guys have any fundraisers (or possibly on your website), would you like to sell some Big Cat Rescue stuff? Right now they have DVD's they would like to sell for $15. (They need about $20,000 more before they can build public restrooms, which are a requirement before they can open to the public.)"
Email Erica if you are interested in this: etplaza@wisc.edu and she will get you in touch with Andrea.

PETER YOUNG and AETA

SALDF is co-sponsoring Peter Young's visit to Madison. Peter Young recently got out of jail for charges filed under AETA (animal enterprise terrorism act). If you are interested in how constitutional law ties into animal law, you won't want to miss this. Peter's story is absolutely fascinating and you can read more about it here. If you are interested in helping me organize this event, please email me at maggie9583@gmail.com . I would really like some help getting the word out! I will keep you updated on the exact dates of his visit..it should be within the next couple of weeks.

Do you hate puppy mills?

Then get involved in the Pet Facilities Law Legislation! This is a really cool way to make a difference in animal law! IF you are interested in helping out with this project or any legislative issues, email Liz at elizabeth.rublein@gmail.com.

Animal Research Debate

FREE! Wednesday, Sept. 26 at the Wisconsin Historical Society (in library mall) at 7pm. This promises to be a heated and interesting debate! Come to learn about a hot topic in animal law and to observe oral arguments in action.
Two highly respected experts on the subject will tackle that issue in a debate sponsored by The Capital Times.
Ray Greek, a retired anesthesiologist, author of three books on the use of animals in human disease and drug research and
president of Americans for Medical Advancement, insists that animal research is useless to predict human results.
He will square off with UW-Madison Prof. Eric Sandgren, an animal researcher and chair of two animal research oversight
committees on campus, who argues that human medical advances have been made as a result of research using animals.
