This year’s speaker will be University of Wisconsin Law School Clinical Professor Carrie Sperling.  She will be discussing Q-Law’s theme “International Love” and discussing various challenges and opportunities the LGBTQ community is facing around the world:

Carrie Sperling joined the University of Wisconsin Law School in August 2013 where she now serves as the Interim Director of the Frank J. Remington Center and Co-Director of the Wisconsin Innocence Project. Prior to her move, Sperling taught at Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law and served as the Executive Director of the Arizona Justice Project, a project that investigates and litigates on behalf of the wrongly convicted.

Professor Sperling became an advocate for LGBT rights in 1994 when, early in her legal career, she served as the Director of the ACLU’s North Texas Region. She co-chaired the Marriage Project in Dallas – a partnership between the ACLU and Lambda Legal Defense that promoted the legalization of same-sex marriage. She led challenges to various discriminatory practices, such as high schools forbidding same-sex couples from attending prom, to schools refusing to recognize LGBT student groups, to county commissioners’ policies that harmed people with the AIDS virus.

In 2009, her fight became personal when the State of Arizona passed a law to strip gay and lesbian employees of their domestic partner benefits. She became a plaintiff in a lawsuit against various state officials. The lawsuit, litigated by Lambda Legal Defense, has been successful, thus far, in allowing gay and lesbian employees like Sperling to keep their partners’ benefits. She has written about LGBT rights, including an article in the Law Journal for Social Justice entitled, “The Rhetoric of Same-Sex Relationships.” Sperling resides in Madison and claims to be married to her partner, Sue Shapcott, although officials in Wisconsin and various other places around the world would almost certainly disagree.
