Student Bar Association ~ SBA Statement
WHEREAS
the Student Bar Association is both a representative body entrusted with the responsibility to enact the will of its constituents and a group of student leaders with a duty to uphold the values of the greater University of Wisconsin Law School;
WHEREAS
the University of Wisconsin Law School has enacted, supports, and believes in a Non-Discrimination Policy that expressly prohibits discrimination based on gender or sexual orientation;
WHEREAS
the United States Department of Defense has enacted and supports a hiring policy that discriminates based on gender and sexual orientation;
WHEREAS
the United States Department of Defense has issued an interim regulation under the authority of the Solomon Amendment, forcing the University of Wisconsin Law School to suspend its Non-Discrimination Policy, allowing Military recruitment within its walls;
WHEREAS
the United States Department of Defense’s practice of discrimination at the University of Wisconsin Law School perpetuates injustice at a time when the Nation has repudiated prejudice and bias as the bases of social policy;
WHEREAS
the University of Wisconsin Law School Community is outraged at being forced to compromise its principles in the face of economic threat, and to suffer discrimination based on gender and sexual orientation;
THEREFORE,
be it resolved by the Student Bar Association, that we do hereby resist and oppose the Solomon Amendment and are outraged by its affront to the University of Wisconsin Law School Non-Discrimination Policy;
THEREFORE,
be it further resolved by the Student Bar Association, that we do hereby pledge our support and attention to the ameliorative efforts of concerned students;
THEREFORE,
be it further resolved by the Student Bar Association, that we do hereby empathize and join with the University of Wisconsin Law Community in its outrage and struggle against the Solomon Amendment’s suspension of our Non-Discrimination Policy;
THEREFORE,
be it further resolved by the Student Bar Association, that we do hereby support and believe in the University of Wisconsin Law School Non-Discrimination Policy which expressly prohibits discrimination based on gender and sexual orientation.
